According to a lot of sources (here's one), priests of Janus offered wine, food and incense to Janus to solicit propitious beginnings to the Roman year. I am, of course, unsurprised at the content (there's a common sacrificial theme to certain Roman gods) and unsurprised at how that matches our celebratory habits.
I am surprised at how little I really think about how the Janus habit permeates my life in other ways. Thresholding, rites of passage, the geminiac image.
Let me not get into how (mostly) lovely this month has been so far ;)
Thanks for this beginning, Janus, you wonderful symbolic conception. I could get into your whole scene.
